This tutorial takes about 4 minutes to complete.

Step 1: Open Disk Management

Open File Explorer and navigate to This PC, then use the Windows search bar to type "disk management" and click "Create and Format Hard Disk Partitions."

Step 2: Identify the Unallocated Drive

Locate your target hardware in the Disk Management window, where it will appear as unallocated space showing its capacity and disk number.

Disk Management window showing Disk 4 as 476.94 GB unallocated space ready to be formatted.

Step 3: Start the New Simple Volume Wizard

Right-click the unallocated partition, select "New Simple Volume," and proceed by clicking "Next" to allocate the full available disk size.

Step 4: Configure Volume Settings

Assign a drive letter, verify the file system is set to NTFS with default allocation sizes, optionally enter a volume label, ensure "Perform a quick format" is selected, and click "Finish."

Step 5: Confirm Drive Availability

Return to File Explorer to verify the newly formatted drive appears with its assigned letter and is ready for immediate use.

Step 6: Open Command Prompt as Administrator

If the format options are grayed out or Disk Management fails, search for "CMD," right-click the result, and choose "Run as administrator."

Administrator Command Prompt window freshly opened, ready to run diskpart commands.

Step 7: Initialize the DiskPart Utility

Type diskpart and press Enter, then immediately type list disk to display all connected storage devices.

Step 8: Select and Clean the Target Disk

Enter select disk X (replacing X with your identified disk number), press Enter, and then type clean to remove all existing partitions.

DiskPart utility showing select disk 4 and clean commands completed successfully, with the disk now unallocated.

Step 9: Create Partition and Format Drive

Type create partition primary, press Enter, and then run format fs=ntfs quick to prepare the drive with the NTFS file system.

Step 10: Assign Drive Letter and Finish

Type assign to allocate a drive letter, exit the utility, and confirm the formatted drive appears in File Explorer ready for use.

FAQ

Use the Command Prompt method with administrator privileges and run the diskpart utility to clean, partition, and format the drive manually.
Yes, but the recommended settings keep the file system as NTFS with the default allocation unit size for optimal Windows compatibility.
Check the capacity and disk number in Disk Management or run `list disk` in the diskpart utility to identify the correct target drive.
A quick format is sufficient for most use cases and speeds up the process, but you can remove the `quick` flag in the format command if you prefer a full format.
